Amway Evangelism

Yesterday, the agency I work for hosted a large fundraiser at the Marriot hotel and convention center in Lancaster city. There were two large events being hosted there throughout the day that were almost indistinguishable, with the exception of their message.

In the first part of the day, a very large evangelical denomination hosted an event in which people camped out in the lobby overnight to be the first in line for good seats. While setting up our event we caught wind that this large group was a great hindrance to the staff as they were relentlessly proselytizing.

The other event was an Amway type group that was nothing short of a nuisance to us. My wife, Amanda, was stationed in the lobby to direct our guests to the ballroom where our event was located. This only lasted for a few minutes as she was unable to accomplish her task being inundated with questions and than propositioned with a “business opportunity.”

In both instances, the style was to fain interest in the person and then make the pitch. I could say a lot more about this, but I’ll simply provide the story and state that our mode of evangelism is defective.
